Nifty's Best Day in Four Months Arrives With 5.54% Inflation and India's Biggest IPO
October 17, 2026 · 13 min read · Updated October 17, 2026
Nifty closed the week at 23,146.15, up about 2.8%, after its best day in four months on Thursday, in a week when India's retail inflation jumped to 5.54% and wholesale inflation to 11.39%. The rally looks more like relief than conviction, with falling crude and US yields doing the work while midcaps and smallcaps lagged, and Friday's gains came mostly from IT. Meanwhile HCLTech and Wipro showed how differently one sector can report, Jio set the terms for India's largest ever IPO, and the Supreme Court ruled against the write off of Yes Bank's AT1 bonds. Six stories, each with its own investor lens.
Why did stocks rally on bad inflation news? Because the rally was about relief elsewhere. US inflation came in hotter and tech stocks sold off worldwide, which pulled US bond yields down and made India look relatively better, while crude eased about 2% on Thursday. Inflation at home is a reason for the RBI to stay cautious, not a reason the market celebrated. Analysts noted weak breadth and said a lasting move needs earnings and returning foreign flows.

1. Nifty's Best Day in Four Months, a Relief Rally Rather Than a Breakout
Nifty 50 closed at 22,997.35 on Thursday, up 374.65 points or 1.66%, and Sensex closed at 74,315.61, up 1,533.72 points or 2.11%, according to HDFC Sky's close report, the biggest single day gain in four months. On Friday Nifty rose a further 0.65% to 23,146.15 and Sensex 0.56% to 74,729.27, a second straight gain. Measured from last Friday's close, Nifty ended the week up about 2.8% and Sensex about 3.1%. IT did the lifting, with the sector up about 4%: Tech Mahindra jumped 8.5% after a better than expected revenue print, TCS rose 4.9% and Infosys 4.6%. Midcaps slipped 0.1% and smallcaps were flat, so the gains were concentrated in large caps. Brent stayed near $105 to $108, depending on the source.
| Session | Nifty 50 close | Change | What moved the market |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon, Oct 12 | 22,363.35 | -0.70% | Fresh Houthi strikes on Saudi Arabia lift Brent; FPIs sell about Rs 1,709 crore |
| Tue, Oct 13 | 22,721.95 | +1.60% | IT leads, Nifty IT up 5.2% after HCLTech results; midcaps up 1.1% |
| Wed, Oct 14 | 22,622.70 | -0.44% | Brent near $107, FPI selling extends to 14 sessions; US CPI due after the close |
| Thu, Oct 15 | 22,997.35 | +1.66% | Best day in four months; crude falls, US yields ease, IT and autos lead |
| Fri, Oct 16 | 23,146.15 | +0.65% | IT jumps about 4% after Tech Mahindra beat; midcaps down 0.1%, smallcaps flat |
The global backdrop helped. US consumer inflation for September rose to 3.7%, faster than expected, which raised the possibility of another Fed rate hike this year, and Wall Street sold off in technology and AI linked stocks. That pulled the US 10 year yield down to about 5.11% from 5.33%, which eased pressure on emerging markets, and Brent crude fell 1.5% to $104.40. The Fed meets on October 28.
Under the surface the picture was weaker. On Thursday 2,606 stocks declined against 1,592 advancers, the Nifty Midcap fell 0.4% and the Smallcap fell 1.3%. Foreign portfolio investors sold for 15 straight sessions through Thursday, about Rs 10,156 crore from Monday to Thursday, with domestic institutions buying about Rs 11,473 crore in response. One analyst called the move a relief rally, noting that Nifty remains below its 50 day and 200 day moving averages, with support near 22,800 and resistance near 23,200.
The global AI trade is cooling
The sharpest signal came from Asia. South Korea's Kospi fell 7.57% on Thursday to 5,554.22, its lowest close since April and about 21% below its September high, which put it in a bear market, according to Sunday Guardian. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix each fell more than 9%. Earlier in the week, on Monday in the US, Micron fell 3.6% on reports of advances by China's memory chipmaker CXMT. The concerns cited include AI spending and funding, Chinese competition and the risk of higher US interest rates. Korea bounced about 3% on Friday after Wall Street closed higher, though foreign investors were still net sellers there, so the rebound may prove short lived.
Why this matters for India: India has little direct exposure to the AI chip boom, and a cooling in that trade can redirect global money towards markets that were left behind. That is our reading, not a forecast, and foreign selling in India has been running for weeks, so it needs to show up in actual foreign flows before it counts as a change.
Investor Lens: A rally driven by falling crude and US yields can reverse when either turns, so it is a poor reason to change a plan in either direction. The better use of a strong week is a calm review: check whether your equity allocation still matches your goals, and keep SIPs running. Our guide on how not to react when markets move is just as useful in a rally as in a fall.
2. Inflation Jumps: CPI at 5.54%, Wholesale Prices at 11.39%
Retail inflation rose to 5.54% in September from 4.83% in August, and food inflation reached 7.74%, according to a summary of the official data. Vegetables did most of the damage: onion inflation more than doubled to about 108%. Rural inflation at 6.08% ran well ahead of urban inflation at 4.88%. A day later, provisional wholesale inflation came in at 11.39%, up from 9.92%, with fuel and power at 25.85%.
| Indicator | Latest |
|---|---|
| CPI inflation (retail) | 5.54%, up from 4.83% in August |
| Food inflation (CFPI) | 7.74%, up from 5.97%; onions up 108% |
| Rural and urban CPI | 6.08% rural, 4.88% urban |
| WPI inflation (wholesale) | 11.39%, up from 9.92% in August |
| WPI fuel and power | 25.85% |
| WPI manufactured products | 9.76% |
| RBI projection, FY27 CPI | 5.2% |
| India 10 year G-Sec yield | About 7.37%, easing from a three year high of 7.39% |
The numbers land one week after the RBI raised the repo rate to 5.50% and projected FY27 CPI at 5.2%. The September reading adds to the pressure. The RBI has said its next move can only be a hike or a pause, and its minutes are due on October 21. One report says markets are increasingly pricing a larger hike in December. That is an expectation, not a decision.
Investor Lens: Rising inflation and rising rates change the maths for debt. Longer maturity bond funds can see near term pressure when yields rise, while fresh deposits and shorter maturity debt can earn more over time. Rural food inflation also matters for consumption linked sectors, as we flagged in our results season guide. This is a good time to review your debt allocation against your time horizon, rather than to predict the RBI.
3. HCLTech and Wipro: Same Sector, Two Very Different Quarters
Two weeks into results season, the IT majors have split. HCLTech reported revenue of Rs 35,620 crore, up 11.5% year on year and 3.0% from the previous quarter, and net profit of Rs 5,132 crore, up 21.2%, according to Free Press Journal. Nifty IT rose 5.2% the next day. Wipro, reporting on Thursday, grew revenue 9.1% to Rs 24,753 crore, but profit fell 1.4% to Rs 3,200.6 crore.
| Metric | HCLTech | Wipro |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | Rs 35,620 crore, up 11.5% YoY | Rs 24,753 crore, up 9.1% YoY |
| Net profit | Rs 5,132 crore, up 21.2% YoY | Rs 3,200.6 crore, down 1.4% YoY |
| Profit versus last quarter | Up 11% | Down 4.5% |
| Margin | EBIT margin 18.2% | IT services margin 16.5% |
| New bookings | $3.26 billion; record first half | $2.60 billion; down 22.9% QoQ in constant currency |
| Next quarter outlook | Not covered in reports we reviewed | IT services revenue from -1.5% to +0.5% |
Wipro's bookings fell 22.9% from the previous quarter in constant currency, and it guided the December quarter to a range from a 1.5% decline to 0.5% growth. Infosys reports on October 23.
Investor Lens: The IT sector is not one bet. A sector index can rise 5% in a day on one company's results while another in the same group guides lower. This is exactly why we suggest looking at margins and guidance, not just the headline profit, as set out in our results season guide. Funds that hold a spread of companies absorb that variation better than a single position.
4. Jio Platforms Sets the Terms for India's Largest IPO
Jio Platforms has set a price band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 per share for an IPO seeking Rs 30,213 crore at the upper end, a valuation of about Rs 10.3 trillion, according to Business Standard. That would be larger than Hyundai Motor's Rs 27,859 crore offering in 2024. The anchor book opens on October 19 and the issue is open for subscription from October 21 to 23. Reports say global sovereign wealth funds and asset managers, as well as domestic mutual funds and insurers, are among the likely anchor bidders, but nothing is confirmed until allotment.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Price band | Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 per share |
| Issue size | Rs 30,213 crore at the upper end; fresh issue of up to 270 million shares |
| Valuation | About Rs 10.3 trillion at the upper end |
| Anchor bidding | October 19 |
| Subscription | October 21 to 23 |
| Lot size | 12 shares, so about Rs 13,428 at the upper end for one lot |
| Employee discount | Rs 54 per share; Rs 500 crore reserved for eligible employees |
| Shareholder reservation | Rs 2,500 crore for eligible shareholders |
| Use of proceeds | About Rs 27,500 crore to prepay borrowings of a material subsidiary |
| Lead bookrunners | Morgan Stanley and Kotak Mahindra Capital |
Two features are worth noting. It is a fresh issue with no offer for sale, so existing investors, including Meta (9.98%) and Google (7.73%), are not selling any shares in the IPO, even though ET reports their holdings have more than doubled in value. That is a vote of confidence worth noting, though it also reflects the structure of the issue and is not a promise about the future. Second, about Rs 27,500 crore of the proceeds is planned to prepay borrowings, so most of the money retires debt rather than funds new projects.
Investor Lens: A very large issue draws a lot of attention, and attention is not analysis. Before applying to any IPO, check it against your goals, your existing exposure to the same group, and your risk appetite, and read the red herring prospectus. The minimum bid is one lot of 12 shares, about Rs 13,428 at the upper end. Nothing here is a recommendation to apply or to avoid.
5. The Supreme Court Rules Against the Yes Bank AT1 Write Off
On Thursday a Supreme Court bench dismissed appeals by Yes Bank, the RBI and the Centre against the Bombay High Court's January 2023 judgment, which had quashed the write off of Yes Bank's Additional Tier 1 (AT1) bonds worth Rs 8,415 crore as part of the bank's 2020 reconstruction. The bench said it decided the questions on merits and answered both in the negative. Yes Bank shares fell as much as 20% intraday to Rs 16.96, and were down about 14% at Rs 18.21 mid afternoon, while Nifty rose.
What happens next is not yet clear. Analysts said it is unclear whether the obligations will be honoured, how, or what solution emerges, and the bank's next steps and its Q2 results on October 17 will matter. The reports we reviewed did not discuss the wider AT1 market.
Investor Lens: AT1 bonds are high yield, high risk instruments that were designed to absorb losses, and this case is a reminder that the risks sit in the fine print. If your portfolio includes debt funds, look at their credit quality and what they actually hold, not only the yield.
6. The Week Ahead: Bank Results, Jio's Anchor Book and RBI Minutes
The large private banks report on Saturday, and management commentary on margins and loan growth will matter. Beyond that, the calendar is dominated by Jio's IPO window, the RBI's minutes and the Fed's October 28 meeting. Foreign investors have been net sellers for weeks, so a return of foreign buying would be a notable change.
| Date | What to watch |
|---|---|
| Sat, Oct 17 | HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Yes Bank Q2 results |
| Mon, Oct 19 | Jio Platforms anchor investor bidding |
| Wed, Oct 21 | Jio Platforms IPO opens; RBI MPC minutes published |
| Fri, Oct 23 | Jio Platforms IPO closes; Infosys Q2 results |
| Tue, Oct 27 | Anup Bagchi takes charge as HDFC Bank MD and CEO |
| Wed, Oct 28 | US Fed policy decision; Jio listing expected, subject to the final schedule |
| Dec 2 to 4 | Next RBI Monetary Policy Committee meeting |
Investor Lens: A packed calendar is not a reason to trade around it. Results, an IPO and central bank decisions will keep the headlines busy, and none of them changes your goals. If you hold a view on rates, inflation or the IPO, check that it is reflected in an allocation you are comfortable holding, and keep your SIPs running through it.
The Week Ahead
Where This Leaves Us
The week's headline is a strong rally and its subtext is inflation. With CPI at 5.54%, WPI at 11.39% and crude above $100, the RBI has little room to be relaxed, and a rally that depends on falling crude and US yields can fade quickly. At the same time the economy and corporate earnings are still producing mixed but real results, from HCLTech's record bookings to Wipro's caution. A large IPO and a court ruling on bank bonds are reminders to read the fine print before acting on a headline. For a calm way to use a busy week, our rebalancing and fund overlap piece and goal based planning guide are good companions. Keep SIPs running through the noise.
Quick Questions
Why did Nifty have its best day in four months on October 15, 2026?
Nifty 50 rose 374.65 points, or 1.66%, to 22,997.35 and Sensex rose 1,533.72 points, or 2.11%, to 74,315.61, the biggest single day gain in four months. Reports pointed to lower crude oil, a fall in US bond yields after a tech led sell-off on Wall Street, a cooling in the global AI trade (Korea's Kospi fell 7.57% on the same day), correcting domestic bond yields and a strong IT sector. Analysts called it a relief rally and noted that breadth was weak, with smallcaps down 1.3%.
What was India's CPI inflation in September 2026?
Retail inflation rose to 5.54% in September 2026 from 4.83% in August, with food inflation at 7.74%, driven mainly by vegetables such as onions. Wholesale inflation rose even faster, to 11.39% from 9.92%, led by fuel and power at 25.85%. The RBI's FY27 CPI projection is 5.2%.
Will the RBI raise interest rates again in December?
Nobody knows yet. The RBI has said its next move can only be a hike or a pause, and the minutes of the October meeting are due on October 21. One report says markets are increasingly pricing a bigger hike in December, but that is a market expectation and not an RBI decision. The next policy meeting is on December 2 to 4, 2026.
How did HCLTech and Wipro's Q2 FY27 results differ?
HCLTech reported revenue of Rs 35,620 crore, up 11.5% year on year, and net profit of Rs 5,132 crore, up 21.2%, with record first half bookings. Wipro reported revenue of Rs 24,753 crore, up 9.1%, but net profit fell 1.4% to Rs 3,200.6 crore, and its guidance for the December quarter ranges from a 1.5% decline to 0.5% growth in IT services revenue. The same sector produced very different outcomes.
What are the Jio Platforms IPO dates, price band and lot size?
Reports say the price band is Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 per share, with anchor bidding on October 19 and subscription from October 21 to 23, 2026. The issue is a fresh issue of up to 270 million shares, seeking Rs 30,213 crore at the upper end of the band, at a valuation of about Rs 10.3 trillion. The lot size is 12 shares, and about Rs 27,500 crore of the proceeds is planned to prepay borrowings. Final details are in the red herring prospectus.
What did the Supreme Court decide on Yes Bank's AT1 bonds?
On October 15, 2026 a Supreme Court bench dismissed appeals by Yes Bank, the RBI and the Centre against the Bombay High Court's January 2023 judgment, which quashed the write off of Yes Bank's AT1 bonds worth Rs 8,415 crore. Yes Bank shares fell as much as 20% intraday. Analysts said it is unclear how the obligations will be honoured and that the bank's next steps will matter.
Should I apply for the Jio IPO?
That depends on your goals, your existing exposure and your risk appetite, and this is not a recommendation to apply or to avoid. Read the red herring prospectus, note that the proceeds mainly repay borrowings rather than fund new growth, and consider how a large single stock position would fit alongside the rest of your portfolio. A financial planner can help you check the fit.
