About this FIRE Calculator India

What is a FIRE number?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. Your FIRE number is the investment corpus that can fund your inflation-adjusted annual expenses for the rest of your life without needing active income. The classic US framework multiplies annual expenses by 25, which corresponds to a 4% safe withdrawal rate. In India, the maths shifts because inflation and post-retirement horizons look different.

Why India needs a different safe withdrawal rate

The 4% rule was built for US retirees with roughly 2 to 3% inflation and a 30-year retirement window. In India, long-term inflation sits closer to 6%, healthcare inflation runs even higher, and a 45-year-old retiring today could easily need the corpus to last 40 years or more. A safer withdrawal rate in the Indian context is 3 to 3.5%, which translates into a target corpus of roughly 28x to 33x your annual expenses instead of 25x. This buffer absorbs poor sequence-of-returns years and rising costs of living without forcing you back to work.

How to use this calculator

Pick the Retirement goal and enter your current age, target retirement age, and current monthly expenses. The calculator projects your future expenses using an assumed inflation rate and returns the corpus you need, along with the monthly SIP required to reach it. You can open the Assumptions panel to adjust return, inflation and life expectancy inputs. Add other goals like child education, home purchase, term cover and health cover to see a combined plan. All numbers are directional estimates for your own planning and not personalised financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is a FIRE number?

Your FIRE number is the corpus that can fund your inflation-adjusted annual expenses indefinitely from investment returns alone. It is typically estimated as annual expenses multiplied by a factor tied to your safe withdrawal rate.

What safe withdrawal rate should I use in India?

For India a 3 to 3.5% withdrawal rate is more appropriate than the classic US 4% rule, given higher inflation and longer post-retirement horizons. That works out to a corpus of about 28x to 33x annual expenses.
