RBI Raises Rates, Nifty Hits a 2026 Low, Then Ends the Week Higher

October 10, 2026 · 13 min read · Updated October 10, 2026

The RBI raised its repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on October 7, the first hike since February 2023, and Nifty still ended the week higher at 22,520.45, up 0.4%, snapping an eight week losing streak after touching its lowest level of 2026 on Thursday. TCS opened the Q2 results season with revenue up 11.2%, the GST Council eased compliance rules without touching broad rates, and Jio's reported IPO window opens in under two weeks. Six stories, each with its own investor lens.

Why did the index recover after a rate hike? The hike was widely expected, so part of it was already in prices. The sharpest fall came the day after, with crude above $104 and heavy FII selling. Friday's rebound came from value buying, short covering and easing fears of US military action on Iran before the November 3 midterms. One good Friday does not remove the swing factors, crude and foreign flows, which are still the ones to watch.

1. The RBI Raises the Repo Rate to 5.50%

The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on October 7, its first increase since February 2023, and changed its stance from neutral to calibrated tightening, according to reports on the policy statement. The rate decision was unanimous, while two members would have preferred to keep the stance at neutral. The Standing Deposit Facility rate is now 5.25%, and the Marginal Standing Facility rate and Bank Rate are 5.75%.

Inflation is the reason. CPI inflation rose to 4.8% in August from 4.5% in July, and the RBI expects headline inflation to average almost 5.8% over the next three quarters, citing higher food and fuel prices, crude volatility, a deficient monsoon and tighter global financial conditions. It also said core inflation is showing signs of broadening. The Governor signalled that the next move can only be a hike or a pause, which means rate cuts are off the table for now.

Real GDP growth, FY27 projection7.1%

Growth data supports the 7.1% projection. The services PMI rose to a final reading of 55.2 in September, a three month high, from 54.1 in August, following the manufacturing PMI of 55.1 we covered last week. On the day, Nifty fell 0.76% to 22,603.05 and Sensex fell 0.59% to 72,638.71, though reports noted the hike was widely expected. PSU banks gained 1% and Bank Nifty slipped only 0.13%. The MPC minutes are due on October 21, and the next meeting is on December 2 to 4.

Last week's digest noted that Nomura had flagged two possible hikes before year end, at the October and December meetings. One has now happened. Whether December brings the second is the open question, and the RBI's own wording, hike or pause, is the thing to track.

Investor Lens: A hike works in different directions for different parts of a portfolio. Loans linked to the repo rate typically reset higher, fresh fixed deposits and short maturity debt can earn better yields over time, and longer maturity bond funds can see near term pressure on their NAV when yields rise. This is a good moment to review your debt allocation against your goals and time horizon, not to make a call on where rates go next. Our pieces on how not to react when bond yields move and rebalancing and fund overlap are worth a re read.

2. Nifty Snaps an Eight Week Losing Streak, the Hard Way

Nifty 50 rose 98.50 points, or 0.4%, to 22,520.45 for the week ended October 9, and Sensex gained 562.63 points, or 0.8%, to 72,472.33, according to Upstox's weekly wrap. The Nifty Midcap 100 was flat, the Smallcap 100 gained 0.5%, and India VIX eased 0.6% to 14.37. The small weekly gain hides a rough path: from Tuesday's close to Thursday's close, Nifty gave up about 2.4%, before Friday's rebound.

Last week we noted that Nifty was sitting almost exactly on its 200 week moving average, near 22,605. This week's closes ranged from 22,232 to 22,776 around that level, which is what a market testing support looks like, noisy rather than decisive.

Investor Lens: Ending a losing streak is a headline, not a signal. What matters for a long term investor is that a roughly 2.4% swing in three sessions came and went without anything about your goals changing. If a move like that made you uncomfortable, it is a useful prompt to check whether your equity allocation matches your risk comfort, and to keep SIPs running regardless.

3. TCS Opens Results Season, and the US Freezes Green Card Processing

TCS reported its September quarter on October 8. Revenue from operations rose 11.2% year on year to Rs 73,188 crore and net profit rose about 15%, with an operating margin of 24%, according to Business Today. Outlets reported the profit figure slightly differently, between Rs 13,884 crore and Rs 13,934 crore, so we use the rounded Rs 13,900 crore. The stock closed 0.42% lower at Rs 2,075.25 on result day, and reports noted that margins stayed under pressure.

MetricQ2 FY27
Revenue from operationsRs 73,188 crore, up 11.2% year on year
Net profitAbout Rs 13,900 crore, up about 15% year on year
Operating margin24%
Total contract value of deals$9.6 billion
Annualised AI revenue$3.1 billion, above 10% of revenue
Headcount5,98,056, with 4,258 added in the quarter
Attrition (IT services, trailing 12 months)13.3%
Second interim dividendRs 12 per share; record date October 14, payment October 30

Separately, the US Labor Department said it would stop accepting new applications and stop processing pending ones under its Permanent Labor Certification (PERM) programme, used for green card applications, for eight companies reported to include TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech, Cognizant, Capgemini, Microsoft and Adobe, with the administration saying the aim is to prioritise American workers. TCS said the directive will not affect its US workforce strategy. Nifty IT still gained 1% for the week and led Friday's rally.

Investor Lens: One result does not make a season. IT earnings are driven by US and European budgets, not India's GDP, and the green card freeze is a policy headline whose effect will show up, if at all, in management commentary. HCLTech reports on Monday and Infosys on October 23, which is where to look. Our results season guide sets out what to read in each sector, and why margins matter more than the headline profit.

4. The GST Council Fixes Compliance, Not Rates

The 57th GST Council meeting on October 8 focused on administration rather than tax rates, unlike the rate rationalisation of the previous meeting. According to a published analysis of its recommendations, the Council proposed removing arrest powers, raising prosecution and penalty thresholds, easing input tax credit restrictions in specific areas, and moving towards automated refunds. These are recommendations, and they still need to be notified through law, rules or circulars before they apply. The same analysis notes that prosecution consequences remain under Section 132, so this is not a full removal of criminal liability.

AreaRecommendation
Arrest powersOmit Section 69 of the CGST Act, withdrawing arrest powers under GST
Prosecution thresholdSection 132 threshold raised from Rs 1 crore to Rs 5 crore
PenaltiesGeneral penalty under Section 125 cut from Rs 25,000 to Rs 10,000
Input tax creditSection 17(5) restrictions removed for outdoor catering, health and life insurance, telecom towers and a few other items
RefundsAutomatic sanction of eligible refunds in phases, with provisional release of 90% for zero rated and inverted duty claims
RegistrationClearer documents, automatic acceptance of most amendments, simplified registration for small ecommerce suppliers
Late feesWaived for delayed returns up to Rs 5 crore turnover, if filed by the end of the month in which they were due
RatesNo broad change; nil GST on psyllium seeds, 5% without input credit on ecommerce delivery services

Investor Lens: None of this changes what you pay at the till, and it is not a market catalyst. It matters for the businesses behind the index: faster refunds release working capital, simpler registration helps small suppliers join the formal economy, and fewer compliance penalties lower the cost of doing business. If you run a business or a professional practice, the refund and late fee changes are worth discussing with your CA once they are notified.

5. Crude Above $100, a Weak Rupee and Persistent FII Selling

Brent crude rose 2.4% for the week, touching $105.92 a barrel before closing at $104.42, on concerns about Middle East supply after attacks on Gulf shipping and in the Strait of Hormuz, and a hurricane threat to US offshore output. Prices eased on Friday after US President Trump said he would not order a resumption of strikes on Iran before the November 3 midterm elections. The rupee traded around 96.7 to the dollar, and rising global bond yields continue to pull money from emerging markets towards US Treasuries and the dollar.

IndicatorLevel
Brent crude, weekly high$105.92 a barrel
Brent crude, Friday close$104.42 a barrel, up 2.4% for the week
USD/INRAbout Rs 96.7 (reports ranged from 96.61 to 96.72)
FII net, October 8 (provisional)-Rs 12,944 crore
DII net, October 8 (provisional)+Rs 10,703 crore
FII net, previous week-Rs 34,966 crore, the seventh straight week of selling
DII net, previous week+Rs 33,455 crore

Foreign investors remained net sellers, and domestic institutions absorbed much of it. Weekly totals for this week were not available when we wrote this, and the October 8 numbers are provisional. The pattern is what matters: foreign selling and domestic buying have both been steady for weeks, with crude as the swing factor.

Investor Lens: Crude is the link between geopolitics and your portfolio. It feeds inflation, inflation drives the RBI, the RBI drives yields, and yields drive foreign flows. That chain is why the same week can hold a rate hike, a crude spike and a relief rally. You cannot predict the next headline, but you can check that your portfolio is spread across sectors that respond to these forces differently, as we explain in the crude section of our results season guide.

6. The Week Ahead: Results, Inflation Data and Jio's IPO

Next week is the first full week of Q2 results, with HCLTech on Monday, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, HDFC Life, HDFC AMC and Nestle on Thursday, and the large private banks reporting on Saturday, October 17. September CPI and WPI inflation data also land, the first numbers after the RBI projected inflation rising to 6.0% in the December quarter.

The bigger story beyond next week is Jio Platforms' reported IPO. Reports citing Reuters say the subscription window is tentatively October 21 to 23, with listing expected on October 28. The issue is reported at about $3.8 billion, structured as a fresh issue with no offer for sale, and the price band has not been announced. Treat all of this as unconfirmed until the offer documents are filed.

Investor Lens: A very large issue draws a lot of attention, and attention is not an analysis. Before applying to any IPO, check it against your goals, your existing exposure and your risk appetite, and read the offer document when it is available. We will cover the details once the price band and prospectus are out. Nothing here is a recommendation to apply or to avoid.

The Week Ahead

Where This Leaves Us

The week had a rate hike, a 1.6% single day fall, and a streak snapped, and the index ended up only 0.4%. The economy is still growing, with services and manufacturing PMIs both above 55, while inflation, crude and foreign flows keep the RBI cautious and the market choppy. Higher rates change the maths for debt and for borrowers, which is a reason to review your allocation, not to second guess the plan. Results season will add real earnings data over the next three weeks, and our results guide and goal based planning pieces are the best companions. Keep SIPs running through the noise.

Quick Questions

Why did the RBI raise the repo rate in October 2026?

The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on October 7, 2026, the first increase since February 2023, because inflation has run above the upper end of its 4% tolerance band since June. CPI inflation was 4.8% in August, the RBI projects 5.2% for FY27, and it cited higher food and fuel prices, a deficient monsoon and crude oil volatility as risks. The committee also moved its stance from neutral to calibrated tightening.

What does the repo rate hike mean for my home loan EMI and fixed deposits?

Loans linked to the repo rate typically reset to a higher rate after a hike, which can raise the EMI or extend the loan tenure, depending on how your lender applies it. Banks may also raise fixed deposit rates over time, though how quickly and by how much differs from bank to bank. Check your loan agreement or ask your lender how the 25 basis point increase will be applied to you.

Is a rate hike bad for debt mutual funds?

When interest rates rise, the prices of existing bonds generally fall, so funds holding longer maturity bonds can see more near term pressure on their NAV than funds holding shorter maturity bonds. Higher rates also mean fresh investments in debt can earn higher yields. The useful question is whether the duration of your debt allocation matches your time horizon and goals, not whether to react to a single policy decision.

Did Nifty and Sensex have a good week despite the RBI rate hike?

Marginally. Nifty 50 rose 0.4% to 22,520.45 and Sensex rose 0.8% to 72,472.33 for the week ended October 9, 2026, ending an eight week losing streak. The path was uneven: Nifty fell 0.76% on the day of the RBI decision and 1.64% on Thursday to its lowest level of 2026, then rebounded 1.3% on Friday on value buying, short covering and a strong IT sector.

How were TCS's Q2 FY27 results?

TCS reported revenue from operations of Rs 73,188 crore for the September 2026 quarter, up 11.2% year on year, and net profit of about Rs 13,900 crore, up about 15%. Operating margin was 24%, total contract value of new deals was $9.6 billion, and annualised AI revenue reached $3.1 billion. The board declared a second interim dividend of Rs 12 per share with a record date of October 14, 2026. Reported profit figures differ slightly across outlets, between Rs 13,884 crore and Rs 13,934 crore.

What did the 57th GST Council meeting decide?

Held on October 8, 2026, the meeting focused on administration rather than tax rates. Reported recommendations include removing arrest powers under Section 69 of the CGST Act, raising the prosecution threshold under Section 132 from Rs 1 crore to Rs 5 crore, cutting the general penalty from Rs 25,000 to Rs 10,000, phased automatic refunds, and simpler registration. These are recommendations that still need to be notified, and there was no broad change to GST rates.

When is the Jio Platforms IPO?

Reports citing Reuters say the subscription window is tentatively October 21 to 23, 2026, with listing expected on October 28, subject to market conditions. The issue is reported at about $3.8 billion and structured as a fresh issue. The price band had not been announced at the time of writing, and none of this is confirmed until the company files its offer documents. This is not a recommendation to apply.
